Unemployment insurance funds

As a bachelor- or a (future) master student considering to stay in Denmark and work after graduation, you might consider becoming a member of an a-kasse already now.

If you have more than 3 months left of your studies, you can become a free student member of CA a-kasse and Akademikernes a-kasse.

What is an unemployment insurance fund?

As an employee and a member of an unemplyment benefit scheme, you can receive unemployment benefit if unemployed for a period of time.

Good to know

  • If you are a student member for minimum one year, you are entitled to unemployment benefits the day after graduation.
  • If you have less than 3 months left of your studies, you can pre-subscribe with an a-kasse now. This means that you will be registered in the a-kasse system, but you will not start paying for the membership before you have graduated. It also means that you are entitled to unemployment benefits one month after graduation.
  • Newly graduates are entitled to unemployment benefits equivalent to 14,690 DKK per month (2015 figures).
  • In order to be entitled to unemployment benefits after graduation, you have to become a member of an a-kasse no later than 14 days after your final exam/thesis defence!
