Residence Certificate/Permit and CPR

Depending on your nationality, you need to apply for a residence certificate (for EU students) or permit (non-EU students) for the duration of your stay in Aarhus. Nordic citizens do not need to apply for residence permit/certificate.

Please note that it is a condition for the residence permit/certificate that you are active and enrolled in an educational programme

In addition, after you have obtained your residence permit or certificate, you must apply for your Danish social security number (CPR). All students regardless of their nationality must apply for CPR. Nordic citizens, however, only have to apply if staying in Denmark for more than six months.

The CPR number is used when dealing with public authorities, health authorities, libraries, banks and the like. The CPR number is issued at the Borgerservice (Citizen Service). The card with your CPR number is also referred to as your health insurance card or ’yellow card’. If you need medical attention before you receive your CPR number, please contact the IC or the emergency room.

If you are staying in Denmark for less than three months, please notify the International Centre.

You will be given the opportunity to apply for your CPR card (and residence certificate - EU students) during your AU Intro Days when the International Centre organises a visit from the Citizen Service and State Administraion! This is not only a convenient opportunity for you since you don't have to apply on your own, but it also allows for a speedier processing since this is a special meeting organised just for you.

Read the appropriate section below to find out what steps you must take to apply for a residence permit/certificate and CPR.

If you move to Denmark with children or if you are married/divorced, please contact citizen service at Dokk1 for further instructions.

NON-EU/EAA Citizens

We recommend that you check with the Danish diplomatic mission in your country of residence for any additional requirements such as fees or additional copies of the application and work permit application procedures. More information about working in Denmark.
