Chemical Engineering Bachelor Programme

The BSc programme in chemical engineering is only offered in Danish.


Chemical processes and reactions are crucial for modern society. Moreover, society is facing major challenges in which chemistry plays a vital role, for example in connection with climate change, diseases and epidemics, pollution and food. This is why chemistry engineers have a central role in developing our sustainable future.

In the Chemical Engineering programme, you will learn to understand chemical properties and processes, and you will be able to apply the theoretical knowledge you gain to develop new products and processes. You will have a number of engineering science courses, for example, on chemistry technologies, materials and design of chemical production processes combined with a high degree of basic theoretical knowledge in mathematics, physics and chemistry. This knowledge will be useful later for anything from the development of new batteries or plastics to water treatment or solar energy storage.

Technology's front runners

Ever since industrialisation, engineering graduates have been front-runners in technological development, and their technical insight and theoretical understanding have helped them build bridges between research and reality. There is just a short step from theory to practice, and you will have an internationally recognised qualification at high academic and theoretical level, enabling you to independently analyse and resolve technical issues from a social perspective.

 

The daily routine

Your days on the programme will be spent in and around the university, and they will be filled with lectures, project work, classroom teaching, laboratory work and problem-solving. The programme has a high degree of experimental work, and in connection with project work there is access to extensive research facilities.

Teaching is research-based, and therefore you will have access to the latest advances within your field from day one. At the same time, you will also be participating in scientific project work with the university's top researchers in the field, and they will also be your teachers and supervisors.

The university and the city

At Aarhus University, you will be part of a large engineering campus with thousands of engineering students, and you will be spending time in the university's historical environment that today is home to a total of 40,000 students and 4,000 internationally recognised researchers. Therefore, you will have ample opportunity to socialise with your fellow students. Together, you will organise social events and parties and will be working closely in project groups in which you will forge close relationships both academically and socially.

You will therefore be able to get involved in both academic and social student associations with your fellow students. For example, you can enjoy a beer in the Friday bar with the other students, or you can participate in social and academic events such as those organised by the Danish Society of Engineers, IDA.

There is also RIA (Rådet for Ingeniørstuderende i Aarhus), which is the students' mouthpiece and gathering point for a better study environment. RIA is responsible for political and social interests for all engineering students at Aarhus University and it is the hub of social events and activities for students.

You can also take part in the university’s student section of the Engineers Without Borders organisation, which makes an active contribution to a number of humanitarian projects abroad. You can also join the Danish Youth Association of Science - UNF, which organises lectures, study visits and summer camps with scientific and technical content.


PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The Bachelor of Engineering component of the MSc in Engineering programme consists of a mixture of lectures, classroom teaching, calculation assignments and lab work which give you hands-on experience in applying your knowledge of chemical engineering.

The natural sciences courses you take include maths and physics, to enable you to calculate dimensions and model the dynamics of chemical processes. You also take courses in organic and inorganic chemistry to learn how to develop materials, in physical chemistry to learn how to design production processes, as well as analytical chemistry, where you learn how to work with process optimisation and quality control.

The programme also includes various engineering courses, lab work and practical exercises, in which you learn about the equipment, machines and processes which enable you to use your knowledge to create value, both at the molecular level in the lab and in large-scale industrial production.

As a student on the Bachelor of Engineering programme in chemical engineering, you join a class of about 30 students. You also have close contact to other BSc and MSc biotechnology and chemical engineering students.

Intensive study programme

On the BSc component of the MSc engineering programme, you should expect about 24 scheduled lessons per week. In addition, you are expected to spend quite a lot of time on independent study and lab work together with your fellow students, in order to achieve a high theoretical level and technological specialisation.

CAREER

The BSc programme in Chemical Engineering qualifies you for direct admission to the two-year MSc in Engineering programme in Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology.

An MSc in Engineering in chemistry from Aarhus University will take you to a job market with very low unemployment. Both Danish and international companies are looking for highly educated and competent chemical engineers, and as a graduate MSc in Engineering you will have good opportunities to choose a career path that matches your academic specialisation and interest.

The degree will open many doors in your future working life, such as research, development, innovation, consultancy and management, either in the private or the public sector, or an academic career at a university in an area of research you find particularly interesting.

Most MSc in Engineering graduates end up working in specialist and problem-solving functions, for example in companies in the pharmaceutical industry, the food industry, the energy sector, the materials industry, and the environmental sector, or in research and development at a knowledge institution. Some also work in HR management, project management and innovation management, using their general technological insight and understanding of society to create value for their companies.

Denmark has a competitive chemicals and consultancy industry where many graduates from the programme find jobs. Examples of large local employers include Dupont, Krüger, Arla, Grundfos and Aarhus Karlshamn, but the list of potential employers is generally long and growing.

The unemployment rate for MSc in Engineering graduates from Aarhus University is generally very low. As a group, their lifetime take-home pay is one of the highest in Denmark.

PhD programme

If you want to, and if you have the skills, after your MSc in Engineering degree you can apply for a PhD programme in which, through a research project in close collaboration with the department researchers, and through courses and individual guidance, you will be trained as a researcher.

 

Biotechnology - Bachelor Programme

The BSc programme in biotechnology is only offered in Danish.

Biotechnology is about using nature's own biological systems and organisms to develop sustainable technologies in areas such as medicine, health, green energy and environmental technology. The global community is investing heavily in this area, and Denmark is right at the forefront. This programme will give you solid theoretical knowledge in specialist subjects such as biochemistry, microbiology, chemistry, cell biology, mathematics and biotechnological production, and on graduating you will enter to a job market with very low unemployment.

DEGREE PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

You  take advanced courses in the fundamental natural sciences subjects such as maths, physics and chemistry.  The degree programme also includes engineering subjects, lab work and practical exercises in a full-scale test facility, where you learn how to use the equipment and master the processes which will enable you to apply your knowledge of science to create value.

You work on solving problems and creating new possibilities in fields such as medical biotechnology, biomechanics, environmental technology, medical diagnosis, nutrition, industrial biotechnology, bioenergy, process control, and much more.

The programme develops your scientific expertise in addition to deep analytical and theoretical understanding of the field at the highest level of abstraction. For this reason, your core subjects include a good deal of maths, including calculations and process modelling, as well as chemistry, through which you learn to understand molecules and reactions in biological systems.

You learn about the manipulation of cells, enzymes and microorganisms on a theoretical level, while courses with an engineering focus teach you to apply your knowledge to designing cultivation processes in a wide variety of contexts.

The courses are research-based, and you have access to the latest advances in your field even as a Bachelor’s student. And as an integrated aspect of the programme, you also participate in applied sciences projects with the university’s researchers in the field, and in many cases with companies as well.
