Help a Mentee to Get Off to a Good Start

The student counsellors at Aarhus BSS offers 2nd semesters Danish and international students the opportunity to get a mentor.

The idea behind Aarhus BSS's Mentor Scheme is that an experienced student (mentor) voluntarily share their experience with a 2nd semster student (mentee). If you would like to help another student, learn more about your self, and challenge yourself, beeing a mentor in Aarhus BSS mentor Scheme would be a good choice.

What Is a Mentor

A mentor is a bachelor's or master's student who voluntarily makes themselves, their knowledge, and experiences available to their mentee. A mentor-mentee relationship is based on the mentee's development, and the mentorship can thus cover many topics.

As a mentor, you should meet the mentee where they are and base your approach on the mentee's situation. Mentorship is centred around the mentee's development, and you should be motivated to make a difference and help a new student get started with university life. You should be prepared to listen and ask questions about your mentee's situation – and be ready to share your valuable experiences.

The mentorship program spans a semester. Where and when you should meet is up to you. It could be in a cafeteria or for a walk.

Former mentors said they experienced personal and professional development through the mentor program. On a personal level, many find joy in making a difference and follow their mentee's progress. Professionally, you will be challenged and required to address unexpected topics and issues, for which you will be equipped through our mentor training.

Mentor Training

As a mentor, it is mandatory to participate in our three hours mentor training workshop, specifically designed for the mentor program. The training is based on many years of experience and knowledge sharing across Aarhus University.

The mentor training will take place on Tuesday, February 22nd.

As a mentor, you will receive intensive training that strengthens your foundation for fulfilling the mentor role. The focus is not only on the mentor role and the relationship between mentor and mentee but also on competence development through conversation and questioning techniques, ensuring that you are best prepared for the mentor role.

If international students participate as mentors the mentor training will be conducted in English.

Participate in The Start-up meeting

We have a starup-meeting, which is mandatory, on Thursday, February 22nd for both mentors and mentees.

The startup-meeting is you and your mentees firtst step towards a good relation. Over a cup of coffee and a piece of cake, you will be introduced to each other for the first time, and together you will conduct an expectation alignment, discussing what the mentee would like to gain from the mentorship.

Apply for Beeing a Mentor

Applicants must be at least 4th-semester students, 6th-semester students, or enrolled in a master's program. Study seniority is considered positively.

The mentor role is voluntary and unpaid.

Upon the project's completion, each mentor will receive a certificate of completed mentor training and the mentor role.

In addition to the mandatory training, your work as a mentor involves conversations with your mentee(s).

We strive to assign you a mentor with the same educational background as yourself.
