Talk to your student counsellor

AU’s student counsellors take harassment, bullying, violence and discrimination very seriously. You can talk to your student counsellor about it in confidence if anything happens to you. The student counsellor will ask you questions about the situation, and you will be talking to an understanding and empathetic person who can help you put your experience into words. The student counsellor can also give you information about where you can get help at the university and outside the university.

Student counsellors have a duty of confidentiality. This means that they will not talk about your experience with other people unless you have given your permission to do so. In practice, this means: 

If you give the student counsellor permission to talk about your experience with other people

  • If you give the student counsellor permission to talk about the issue, the head of studies will be informed. The head of studies in most cases will call you in for a meeting, where she/he will be able to hear your version of the case. 
  • A natural next step, depending on the case, may be that the head of studies calls in the second party to a conversation. 
  • The head of study will make a decision about the progress going forward after this.

If you do not give the student counsellor permission to talk to other people about your experience

  • If you do not want the student counsellor to talk to other people about your experience, then the conversation stays between you and the student counsellor. This means that the student counsellor may refer you other relvant help resources, and you can contact those yourself, if you think that could be helpful for you.
