Here is a list of important dates and events that take place throughout the year in Aarhus and at Aarhus University. This way you can keep up with what´s going on in your new home town.

1 January - New Year’s Day**

15 January - Deadline for Non-EU/EEA/Swiss applicants to apply for Master’s programmes.

18 January - 9 February - Introduction Days (dates vary depending on your programme – find info here)

February - Spring semester begins (exact dates vary depending on the programme in question)

5 February – Crown Princess Mary’s Birthday*

6 February – Princess Marie’s Birthday*

7 February – Fastelavn (carnival)

11-21 February - Aarhus Gastro Week - try top restaurants in Aarhus at cheap prices

12 February - Open Day for international full degree students

 

March

15 March - The application system to apply for exchange at Aarhus University in the autumn 2016 opens 

15 March - Deadline to apply for Master's and Bachelor's programmes (For Master’s only EU/EEA and Swiss citizens – please see earlier deadline for others)

15 March - Deadline to apply for AU Summer University

20 March – Palm Sunday

22 April – Great Prayer Day (Store Bededag) - many Danes eat toasted wheat buns the night before **

25 April - 1 May - Festival of Research (Forskningens Døgn)

28 April - 1 May - SPOT festival

1 May - Deadline to apply to go to Aarhus University on exchange in the autumn 2016

1 May - Deadline to apply for housing as an exchange student coming in the autumn 2016

1 May – International Worker’s Day

4 May – Light candles in windows to commemorate the liberation of Denmark in 1945

5 May – Denmark’s Liberation Day*

5 May – Ascension Day (Kristi Himmelfartsdag)* **

8 May - Mother's Day

9-13 May - Internet Week Denmark

10 May - Deadline to apply for AU Summer University – last chance (only for courses that still have available spots)

15 May – Bank Holiday - The Friday after Ascension Day most offices and stores are closed

22-24 May - Classic Car Race

15 May – Whit Sunday (Pinsedag)* **

16 May – Whit Monday (2. pinsedag)**

26 May – Crown Prince Frederik’s Birthday*

Not yet announced - The Boat Race at Aarhus University (Kapsejladsen)

 

June

4 June - Aarhus Pride Parade

5 June – Constitution Day (Grundlovsdag) some offices are closed from noon. (many stores are open until midnight 4 June)*

5 June – Father’s Day (Fars dag)

7 June – Prince Joachim’s Birthday*

11 June – Prince Henrik’s Birthday*

15 June – Valdemar’s Day & Reunion Day*

17-19 June - Northside Festival

19 June - Aarhus City Half Marathon

23 June – St. John’s Eve / Midsummer (Sankthansaften) - many students celebrate this in the University Park

1 July - AU Summer University Term 1 begins

9-16 July - Aarhus Jazz Festival 

15 July - AU Summer University Term 2 begins

 

August

Mid-late August - Intro weeks for new international students

26 August - 4 September Aarhus Festival (Aarhus Festuge) (not official flag-day, but all busses in Aarhus will be decorated with Danish flags)

 

 

September

September - The Autumn semester begins (exact dates vary depending on the programme)

11 September - Annual celebration of Aarhus University (founded 11 September 1928)

11 September - Denmarks Biggest Friday Bar and Sports Day 

15 September - The application system to apply for exchange from Aarhus University to one of our partner institutions in the spring 2017 opens 

 

 

October

30 October – Daylight savings time ends (turn your clocks back one hour)

31 October – Halloween (Allehelgensaften)

 

 

November

1 November - Deadline to apply to go to Aarhus University on exchange in the spring 2017

1 November - Deadline to apply for housing as an exchange student in the spring 2017

4 November - Aarhus Symposium

11 November – St. Martin’s Eve (Mortensaften) - many Danes eat duck for dinner on this day

 

 

 

December 

1 December - Application system to AU Summer University 2017 opens

1 December - The application system to apply for exchange from Aarhus University to one of our partner institutions in the autumn semester 2017 and the spring semester 2018 opens.

13 December – St Lucy’s Day (Luciadag) 

Mid-December – Application system to Master’s programmes summer 2017 opens

Mid-December - Holiday Farewell for all international students

24 December – Christmas Eve - most stores, offices and banks are closed

25 December – Christmas Day* **

26 December – Boxing Day/Second day of Christmas** 

31 December – New Year’s Eve - most offices are closed - stores close early
