Palms as keystone species in tropical forests

Palms are diverse and abundant in tropical forests. Some palms play important roles in the forest ecology by providing food for frugivores throughout unfavorable seasons when other food sources are scarce. Such species are called “keystone species”. Until now the concept of keystone species is not strictly defined and information about keystone species is often anecdotal. Based on existing examples of palms as keystone species, the project will review the literature and provide a clear definition of the keystone species.
