First year exam rules

According to the Examination Order all academic regulations for bachelor degree programmes must include a section regarding first year exams. This states a number of exams that new bachelor students must participate in and pass within the first year of study.

If you do not fulfill the requirements to the first year exam rules, you will be discontinued from your degree programme. If you are discontinued, it will not be possible to be enrolled in the same programme again unless you receive an exemption.

What is the first year exam rule?

According to the Examination Order all academic regulations for bachelor degree programmes must include a section regarding first year exams. This states a number of exams that new bachelor students must participate in and pass within the first year of study.

If you do not fulfill the requirements to the first year exam rules, you will be discontinued from your degree programme. If you are discontinued, it will not be possible to be enrolled in the same programme again unless you receive an exemption.

As a new bachelor student (commenced in 2016 or later) you must pass the first year exams within the first year of your degree programme.

You will find the courses that form part of your first year exams in the academic regulations.

First year exams rules at BSc(B)-programme

For bachelor students enrolled in the BSc(B)-programme you have to pass the following courses to fulfill the first year exam rules:

  • Mathematics (5 ECTS)
  • Business Statistics (5 ECTS)
  • Financial Accounting (10 ECTS)
  • Organisational behaviour (10 ECTS)

You will automatically be signed up for the first exam attempt in your first year exams and you cannot withdraw from these exams.

If you do not pass courses that are part of the first year exams at your first attempt, you must sign up for the reexamination. If you do not pass the courses on your second attempt you have to sign up for the last attempt at the reexamination in August.

You will find information about exam registration here at your study portal.

For students who started their bachelor programme in 2015 or earlier

There are different first-year exam rules depending on whether you started your bachelor programme in 2015 or 2016.

The rules described below applies only to students who started in 2015 or earlier.

There are special exam rules on your first year of the bachelor programme.

In the BSc-programme it concerns all exams on your first and second semester.

In short terms the rules can be described as follows:

  • you have to pass the exams no later than 2 years after your admission

You do not have to pass the exams the first time, but you have to be signed up for them. This happens automatically. If you do not pass – or do not participate – you have used the first of your 3 exam attempts in the given exam. You will automatically be signed up for the re-exam in the exams that you did not pass in the first attempt.

If you have good reasons not to be signed up for the exams on your first year – e.g. illness documented by a doctor can be such a reason – you can get an exemption. But e.g. a planned skiing holiday is not a good reason!

If you have to re-take one or more of the first year exams

If you after 1 year in the study programme still have not passed your first year exams, you have only one year left in which to pass them. Many students get so involved with the interesting second year courses that they "forget" the first year exams. It sounds strange but the fact is that it happens to students every year! Even if you pass all courses in the second year with good grades you will be expelled from the program if you miss just one small exam from the first year.

If you have to re-take first year exams in your second year it is a good idea to consider taking the relevant courses again. You can be signed up for the courses by contacting the Aarhus BSS Student Services.

Always contact the Student Counsellor's Office if you are in doubt or if you consider changing programs. Come as soon as possible!

First year exam rules - Global Management and Manufacturing (GMM)

At all professional bachelor's degree programmes there is a first-year exam equivalent to 45 optional ECTS from the first year (60 ECTS) on your degree programme. The first-year exam must be passed before the end of the first academic year.

For 2nd semester courses (according to the academic regulations), it will only be possible to attend examinations twice before the end of the first academic year. For 1st semester courses a third examination attempt will be offered in the reexamination-period in August.

Even if you have unused examination attempts, you will lose the right to these if the time limit has expired. You cannot get a prolonged time limit for passing the exam because of unused examination attempts.

If there is any risk that you will be unable to fulfil the passing requirements due to for example long-term illness or other special circumstances, it is possible to apply for exemption of the time limit.
