Do you want to work with international projects?

If you are interested in working on large international construction projects, knowledge about the FIDIC Conditions of Contract is an absolute MUST. The FIDIC Conditions of Contract are used in the construction industry worldwide, particularly in the context of higher value international construction projects, and are endorsed by many multilateral development banks.

This course offers the opportunity to gain a competitive advantage by becoming fluent in the usage and application of the FIDIC Contracts – which, despite their increasing importance in today’s globalised world, are not given due attention by universities. That is why Aarhus University now offers a thorough three-week Summer University course at Master’s level in International Construction Law. The course applies to both students and practitioners, and it is the first of its kind to be organised at an academic level in Denmark.

Knowledge of domestic standard forms is insufficient in large projects
Domestic construction agreements are often inappropriate when it comes to large scale construction projects either because they are unknown to one of the parties or because they are not endorsed by the banks financing the project. Therefore, most firms and their advisers, especially in international construction projects, often resort to the use of international standard form construction agreements, such as the FIDIC Conditions of Contract.

According to Dimitar Kondev, an attorney-at-law and a PhD Fellow at Aarhus University, most students and practitioners who later end up working within international construction are unaware of the importance of and the competitive advantage that knowledge about FIDIC Contracts yields.

“Besides being important, international construction law is one of the most lucrative fields of law, and it is increasing in popularity because of the rise of the number of construction projects based on the FIDIC contract forms. Knowledge of the FIDIC forms is usually acquired through practice and participation in two-day courses for practitioners, which are extremely expensive. However, now students will have an excellent opportunity to study this subject at an academic level, which will give them a solid base that they can apply later on in their practice.”

How to settle construction disputes
Given his seven years of experience Dimitar Kondev has a thorough understanding of this specialised area of law and its interaction with commerce and industry. Based on this, he has put together a solid three-week course aimed at providing the participants with a legal foundation enabling them to conduct and communicate legal analysis in relation to key topics in the field of international construction law.

Furthermore, as legal matters can often end up in disputes, enhanced problem solving skills are also a part of the course.
