A signature building complex in the University City has been given names: Welcome to the City Auditorium and the University Square
AU and FEAS have decided on the names of the University City's new auditorium and the square in front of it: Byauditoriet/the City Auditorium and Universitetstorvet/the University Square. According to University Director Kristian Thorn, the names are inspired by the vision of a cohesive campus in Aarhus that also welcomes the the outside world.
The City Auditorium and the University Square. These are the new English names of the recently completed round auditorium (building 1790) and the brick-paved square at the heart of the University City on the Aarhus campus.
“The City Auditorium gets its name from its location in the University City. The name follows the same logic as the ‘Lakeside Lectures Theatres’ in the University Park, which are named after their location next to the lakes at the centre of the University Park,” explained University Director Thorn, adding:
“The University Square points to the function of the space as a meeting place in close proximity to the city. It’s our hope that the University Square will become a recreational and social space – for members of the university community and city residents alike – just like the University Park on the other side of Nørrebrogade.”

The names of the City Auditorium and University Square were chosen in accordance with AU's naming principles, according to which buildings with special functions, history or significance can be given names in addition to their identifying building numbers.
