Aarhus University once again increases intake of new students

This year, a total of 7,160 applicants have been offered a study place at Aarhus University. The university therefore expects to admit more Bachelor's degree students than ever before, including 800 new exchange students.

A very realistic approach to their choice of study programme and more broadly targeted applications, both geographically and in terms of field of study, are some of the reasons for the overall increase in the number of new Bachelor's degree students at Aarhus University. This year has also been characterised by many applications for those study programmes which society demands, and which traditionally have no restrictions on the number of study places.

"The young people are sending a strong signal that they take the social situation seriously by applying for those programmes which the labour market demands. It is also a strong sign of maturity that more and more applicants have both a plan B and a plan C in place," says Mette Thunø, Dean for Education at Aarhus University.

1,300 new international students

Aarhus University can also welcome some 1,300 new international students: A little more than 400 Bachelor's degree students, 800 exchange students and 100 Erasmus Mundus students.

"I would like to extend my warmest welcome to the many international students who have just been admitted. At Aarhus University, it is a priority to provide the international students with the guidance and assistance they need while studying here, e.g. in the new Dale T. Mortensen Building, which, in addition to student accommodation, also houses the International Centre and a café that is the venue for frequent events,” says Dean Mette Thunø and encourages the new international students to make use of the university's many academic and social facilities.

The 800 new exchange students represent 48 countries, the largest being Germany, Spain, France and Italy. However, the USA, Australia and Canada are also well represented, and Aarhus University is also opening its doors to more and more Asian students from partner universities.

Popular engineering degree programmes

Another main reason for the expected record-breaking intake of 7,160 Bachelor's degree students at Aarhus University is that this year the university will also welcome 549 new engineering students to the Faculty of Science and Technology (ST). The most popular programmes among the future engineering students are Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering and Healthcare Technology. At ST, the Bachelor's degree programmes in Geology, Mathematics, Mathematics - Economics, and Agriculture, Food and Environment are also seeing an increase.

Globalisation has also left a clear mark on the wishes of applicants, as all places at both Brazilian Studies, Chinese Studies, Japanese Studies and South Asia Studies looked to become fully booked. The same trend is evident for several European culture and language degree programmes.
