Construction of the light rail is under way

On 15 October 2014, Aarhus Letbane I/S began construction on the light rail line on Nørrebrogade between Aarhus University and Aarhus University Hospital.

Aarhus Letbane has begun construction on the light rail, which is expected to be completed in 2017. The construction of the light rail will begin with the establishment of two cyclist and pedestrian tunnels along with an elevator shaft in the existing tunnel at Wilhelm Meyers Allé.

In connection with the construction of the tunnels, piles and sheet plates must be driven into the ground to stabilise the tunnels, which will produce noise and vibrations. The tunnels are expected to be completed in March 2015, after which the foundation of the light rail will be built.

Increased travel times

During rush hour, you should expect increased travel times if you’re travelling by bus or car. This is due to the fact that two lanes will be blocked while the tunnels are under construction. There will still be two mixed-flow lanes in each direction, however, as bus lanes will be temporarily converted to mixed-flow lanes. This means that both busses and other vehicles will share these lanes. The construction will also affect cyclists. Cyclists will be directed to use the pavement during this period.
