When are students allowed to use GAI at AU?
Can you use GAI for your exams? And what do you need to keep in mind when you do you use GAI? Read on for a quick brush-up on AU’s GAI rules.
As a student at AU, you have access to a whole palette of GAI tools that can help you with your studies. But it’s important that you use these tools selectively, that you approach them critically and – not least – that you make sure you understand the rules for when and how you can use GAI in your exams.
As a general rule, you are allowed to use GAI tools in your exams unless your academic regulations or course description explicitly state that you are not allowed to do so.
This rule has been in place since the summer of 2024. And this is still the rule you need to follow. And a consequence, you need to make sure you familiarise yourself with how this rule applies to each of your courses.
What you need to know about GAI before your exam
For exams where you are allowed to use GAI, there are some rules you have to follow. If you don’t follow the rules, using GAI will be considered academic cheating.
- The university’s rules about academic cheating and plagiarism also apply to papers and assignments where students use GAI. See the rules for using GAI in exams and AU’s general guidelines on exam cheating
- If you use GAI-generated content (text, images etc.), you must reference it as you would any other source.
- If you use GAI for take-home assignments (including Master's theses and Bachelor's projects) where GAI is allowed, you must attach a declaration explaining how you use GAI in your work. Get the template for the declaration here. You won’t be graded on the declaration and your reflections on your use of GAI unless you write about your use of GAI in your paper in the methodology section.
- If you use GAI for written on-site exams where using GAI is allowed, you don’t have to submit a declaration.
- Special rules apply to the use of GAI for proofreading and inspiration — read more here
When you use GAI tools in your studies, remember to use them critically, selectively and responsibly. GAI should support and enhance your own work and academic development, not replace it.
- On AU Studypedia you’ll find lots of good advice, tips and tricks on how to use GAI appropriately.
And remember: never upload confidential or sensitive personal information to GAI tools.
