New Student Exchange Opportunities in the Middle East

Aarhus University has recently entered into two university wide exchange agreements with The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel and the American University in Beirut, Lebanon.

The agreements are Aarhus University’s first in the Middle East. Vice-Dean of Arts, Jan Ifversen explains:

“Whether we look at the Middle East from a historical, cultural, political or economic point of view, it is a region that is of vital importance for our understanding of the world. Furthermore, during the past years, there has been an increasing focus on research and education in many countries in the region, which makes it even more interesting for AU to enter into formalized ways of cooperation in this part of the world”.

Several Academic Areas point to Israeli Universities as Partners

Several academic areas at AU have pointed to the great potential in establishing attractive student exchange agreements between AU and Israeli Universities, which in many areas are among the best in the world/international elite. Consequently, there have been efforts to strengthen relations to selected Israeli universities and this has now proven fruitful.

The agreement with The Hebrew University of Jerusalem entails, among other benefits, that two students can go on exchange each semester.

The first students for Beirut will be leaving in autumn 2014 while the first students for The Hebrew University are expected to leave in spring 2015.

Jan Ifversen sees a further perspective in the new agreements: ”The Faculty of Arts has had good collaboration with these universities and the new agreements confirm that there is a mutual interest in developing cooperation, both within research and education.”
