The bombing of Aarhus University
The Royal Air Force bombed Aarhus University 70 years ago this year, and a new exhibition at AU commemorates the event, the most dramatic day in the history of the university.
On 31 October 70 years ago, Royal Air Force bombers flew over Aarhus. The target: The Gestapo’s headquarters in University Park residence halls 4 and 5. In 1944, the Gestapo was a major threat to the Danish resistance movement in Jutland, and so the resistance appealed to the Royal Air Force to bomb the Gestapo’s archives in the residence halls.
The precision strikes and the incredible story of how resistance fighters who were being detained by the Gestapo were found alive amidst the rubble are some of the events you can learn about at Aarhus University’s exhibit The Air Raid on Gestapo Headquarters, which opens on 2 November.
The exhibit is in the basement of the Museum of Ancient Art at AU, and runs from 2 November to 23 November 2014.
Opening hours:
Sunday -Thursday 12:00-16:00
