The first days of your study

Who are we? 

We are a group of senior students looking forward to welcoming you to the Department of Mathematics. We will be there to guide you through the whole program during the intro days. If you have any questions about your new degree programme, feel free to ask us. (contact link in the bottom).

The mentors you will meet are students who are studying programmes similar to yours, and we have extensive knowledge about the programme and what it’s like to be a new student including being a new international student. We want to help you get off to a good start, as we’ve been in your shoes and know that starting something new can feel a bit overwhelming. 

But what can you use the mentoring scheme for as a new student? 

In your daily life, we will act as peer advisors, creating an overview and better conditions for you to settle into your studies socially and academically. Below you can read more about what the mentors can do for you. 

Commencement of studies 

We are responsible for arranging the best possible start on your new degree programme. It can be difficult to keep track of everything in the first few days but keep in mind - fortunately we meet once a week during the first term, so there is plenty of time for any questions. 

Workshops 

We want to make the transition to university smoother, among other things, through our workshops during the first term. These workshops are held once a week and are different from the theoretical exercises. In the workshops, we work with concrete, practical exercises that help make the academic material more accessible and easier to understand. 

We also share advice on arriving in Denmark as an international student, how to structure assignments, explore different learning styles, and demystify the exam process. 

Overall, the workshops are designed to give you useful tools that can make your time at university a bit easier. 

Study groups 

We often experience that new students worry about whether they will be assigned to a study group or not. However, there is no need to be nervous! During the first term, you will work together in different study groups assigned by us. We have made a rotation with different study groups, so we ensure you can make a choice of a final study group yourself. Our experience tells us that the people you get along with socially outside the classroom aren’t always the best ones to work with academically. Thus, it is important to try different constellations. We help to ensure a good framework for the formation of final study groups towards the end of the first term. 

Individual conversations 

In the middle of the first term, you will be offered a one-on-one conversation with one of your mentors. The purpose of this conversation is to give you the space and time to reflect upon your first period at university. We do not only see you as a student number, and if you encounter problems during the term, there is time to talk about things - we want you to feel good on your new study.

Us onboarding mentors are students who are studying either IT Product Development or Computer Science and we have extensive knowledge about the programme and what it’s like to be a new student. We want to help you get off to a good start, as we’ve been in your shoes and know that starting something new can feel a bit overwhelming. 

Introduction days and beginning your studies  

We are responsible for arranging the best possible start to your new degree programme and you will meet us during the introduction days, where we will take care of you for three days, and we have everything planned for you and your team of fellow students. It can be difficult to keep track of everything in the first few days, but keep in mind that we are here to help you.  
You will continue to meet us during the first term through either weekly class hours or office hours, so there is plenty of time for any questions. 

Help during your studies 

We are also happy to help you navigate through all of AU's offers and guide you to other people you can contact for help - and there are many who can and will help you, whether it concerns well-being, study doubts, IT systems or something else. We act as a link between you and the Department and others that we can forward you to for help, and if you don’t know who to ask. If you have any questions after the introduction days, please feel free to reach out during the class hours or office hours.
