Illness in connection with exams

Please mind your three examination attempts!

  • Please contact the Student Counsellors, if you have questions about your exams
  • Deregistration from an exam: please send the application before the exam starts. Doctor’s certificate/medical reports can be send later.
  • All applications for exemption must be sent through mystudies.au.dk.
  • Please find more information about exemptions and required documentation under  Rules and guidelines - exemptions
  • If you are close to the date of the examination, please contact Studieservice.nat-tech@au.dk

Before the examination begins

If you are ill and unable to attend the examination:

  • You must send an application to be deregistered for the exam. It is very important that you send the application before the examination begins. E.g.: If the exam starts at 9, you must send the application before 9.
  • Oral exams start at the time the first student is examined.
  • You must provide documentation that states why you are unable to attend the exam.
  • If you are sick on the day of the examination, you must contact your doctor as soon as possible to get a doctor’s certificate.
  • You must send the doctor’s certificate together with the application.
  • If you do not have the doctor’s certificate by the time of application, you can send the doctor’s certificate later.
  • If the Study Board grants an exemption, it means that you have not used an examination attempt.

On the day of the examination – after the exam has started

If you are ill and unable to attend the examination

  • Please contact your doctor on the day of the examination, or as soon as possible, to get a doctor’s certificate, if you are sick and unable to attend the examination. Please note that this also applies to chronic conditions. The Study Board will put emphasis on the date of issuance in the assessment. It is very important that you save the doctor’s certificate as you may need it if you must apply for a new examination attempt.
  • Please note that if you do not attend the exam, you have used an examination attempt.
  • If you apply for deregistration after the commencement of the examination, you have also used an examination attempt.
  • If you have remaining examination attempts, you must use these.
  • You must register for the next possible exam or re exam in the given course.
  • If you have used your last examination attempt, you must apply for an exemption to have a new examination attempt. To be granted an exemption, you must document your illness from the day of the examination.

*An exception may be if you were unable to deregister prior to the exam due to spontaneous and acute illness on your way to/from the exam.

Illness during the examination

If you fall ill during the examination, you should consider discontinuing the examination.

Please note! If you choose to finish the examination despite your illness, the Study Board’s decision will reflect this. The Study Board will put emphasis on the fact that you have chosen to finish the exam despite your illness and less attention will be given to the doctor’s certificate. The Study Board always makes individual assessments of each application and can, in some cases, deviate from our normal practice.

  • Contact the examiner and/or exam observer and tell her/him that you are leaving the exam because you feel ill.
  • You have used an examination attempt.
  • Contact your doctor on the same day or as soon as possible after the day of the exam to get a doctor’s certificate. This also applies to chronic diseases. The Study Board will put emphasis on the date of issuance in the assessment. It is very important that you save the doctor’s certificate as you may need it if you must apply for a new examination attempt.
  • If you have remaining examination attempts, you must use these.
  • You must register for the next possible exam or re exam in the given course.
  • If you have used your last examination attempt, you must apply for an exemption to have a new examination attempt. To be granted an exemption, you must document your illness from the day of the examination.

Illness in immediate family

Exceptional circumstances in connection with examinations can also be acute and/or chronic illness in your immediate family. Immediate family includes parents, spouse, partner and children.

If your examination is affected by illness in your immediate family and you need to apply for an exemption, you must send documentation that states how the situation has affected you. This can be a doctor’s certificate from your own doctor. It is not necessary to send documentation for your relatives’ illness.
