Study Abroad in Physics and Astronomy

If you are considering going on exchange during your studies in Physics and Astronomy, there are several opportunities available to you. Regardless of what you choose, the courses you take must be approved by your degree programme coordinator.

If you have questions regarding the academic aspects of your exchange, you can speak with your student counsellor or your degree programme coordinator. For questions about the application process and related matters, please contact your international coordinator

When can you go abroad?

If you want to go on exchange during your Bachelor’s degree, we recommend going in the 5th or 6th semester.
If you want to go during your Master’s degree, we recommend going in the 1st (7th) or 2nd (8th) semester.

Choosing Courses During Your Study Abroad Stay

Once you have found some interesting courses at the host university, you should consider the following:

  • Does the course content overlap with courses you have already taken in your Physics programme? If the overlap is too significant, your application to take the course abroad will be rejected.
  • Do you meet the academic prerequisites for taking the course?
  • Is the course at an appropriate academic level?
  • Is the course content research-based – i.e., is the lecturer an active researcher within the subject area or a closely related field? If the teaching is not research-based, your application to take the course will be rejected.
  • As a Master’s student, you may be allowed to take a Bachelor’s level course if it is an advanced course at the host university and a similar course is not offered at AU.

We will check all of the above as part of the pre-approval process, but you will be doing both yourself (and us) a favour by checking it in advance. Otherwise, your application for pre-approval may be rejected.
