Aim

The overall goal is to provide students with the fundamental knowledge and hands-on experience necessary to analyze proteomics or genomic results, and learn how to apply these techniques in the laboratory.

Contents

This course will focus on the theoretical and practical aspects of proteomics such as separation sciences including sample preparation; separation techniques (gel electrophoresis (1 and 2 Dimensional) and the non-gel based technique MUDPIT); and methods for protein detection and quantification. The theoretical and practical aspects of mass spectrometry (MALDI and electrospray) will be covered. Combined with the above, methods concerning applied genomics such as the use of DNA/RNA and protein arrays will be presented, as will the application of bioinformatics tools to identify genes, proteins and post-translational modifications.

Term

Summer course, 2 weeks (9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day)

Prerequisites

Advanced Biochemistry, Techniques in Molecular Biology and Advanced Molecular Biology or instead of the two latter, Molecular Biology A

Types of classes

Lectures, theoretical exercises, colloquia and laboratory exercises.

Types of evaluation

1. A written laboratory exercises report combined with the solution of an individual question based on a research paper. 2. Bachelor report. Evaluation will be according to the 13 point system with external censorship.
