New rules for SU: What you need to know

The SU rules have changed, and the new rules will affect everyone starting a new degree programme – including a Master’s degree programme – after 1 July 2025. If you’re a Bachelor’s student, it’s important you start planning your course of study according to the new rules.

As part of the new SU reform, new rules for SU (the state education grant and loan scheme in Denmark) will soon come into force. The new rules will apply to all students starting a higher education degree programme – including a Master’s degree programme – on or after 1 July 2025.

One of the new rules is that students will have 58 monthly SU grants for their higher education degree programme – instead of the 70 today. This means that, from 1 July 2025, students will only receive SU for their prescribed time to degree.

Plan your SU now – so that you don’t run out of monthly grants

Although the new rules don’t take effect until 1 January 2027, it’s important to be aware that the study choices you make on your Bachelor’s degree may affect how much SU you’re entitled to claim on your Master’s degree.

So it’s essential to start planning your course of study now according to the new SU rules. For example, if you’ve used extra monthly SU grants by taking more time to complete your Bachelor’s or by taking more than one Bachelor's, you may run out of SU before you complete your Master’s.

  • It will no longer be possible to extend your SU period for 12 months beyond your prescribed time to degree
  • It will be possible to take out a completion loan for up to 24 months
  • It will be possible for students with a disability or single provider supplement to receive 12 extra monthly SU grants in addition to the 58
