University elections are held every year, but there is a four-year election cycle that determines which seats on which bodies are up for election and who can vote. This year, students were able to vote in elections to the faculty’s academic councils, local boards of studies and PhD committees. The two student representatives on the AU Board are elected every two years – and were not up for election this year.

In contrast, staff could vote for their representative on the AU Board as well as the same councils, boards and committees as the students. Overall voter turnout at AU was 20.64 per cent.

Fewer cancelled elections
For student seats, there were 11 cancelled elections this year, which is approximately half the number of elections cancelled in 2022. But this still means that, in the upcoming representation period, there will be 11 unfilled seats on the various boards of studies and PhD committees.

There were 39 contested elections this year – i.e. elections in which it was possible to vote for different candidates. Voter turnout varied significantly across the university. 163 candidates were elected in uncontested elections – where only one person stands and is thus automatically elected without a vote.
