12 extra SU portions in addition to the standard study-time

If you started your first higher education no later than 2 years after completing the first qualifying education (upper secondary school / high school), you have the opportunity to apply for 12 extra SU portions in addition to the standard study-time (to use if you are delayed in your studies).

There is also the possibility that you can be excepted from the 2-year deadline, and still apply for the extra 12 SU-clips.

Read more about exception, rules, and applications on this site.

Exception from the 2-year deadline

In some cases you can be excepted from the 2-year deadline and be eligible to get the 12 extra SU-portions in addition to your standard study time.

The following reasons can leed to an exception from the 2-year deadline:

  1. Compulsory military service (conscription)
  2. Education with the purpose of, or as a part of, international missions in the military
  3. Adoption or paternity leave
  4. Long-term illness, also in recerence to a disability (you can read more about our criteria for documenting the ilness under "medical certificate")
  5. Taking care of a relative, who is disabled, severely ill or dying
  6. Training for and competing in the Olympics or Paralympics as an elite - or worldclass athlete who is designated by Team Denmark

There needs to be concrete evidence that you were not able to start your first higher education (e.g. University) within two years from completing your first upper secondsary school/high school, based on on or more of these reasons.

You have to apply for exception from the 2-year deadline in minSU -> søg SU -> støttetid.
Remember to upload all the relevant documentation.

Example

Criteria for your medical certificate

The content of your medicial certificate is of utmost importance when determining wheter you meet the crieria for an exception of the 2-year deadline. Therefore, the SU Office urge you to be very attentive to the following:

  • Your medical certificate needs to state that you have been sick
  • Your medical certifitace needs to document the exact period that you were sick
  • Your medical certifitace needs to state that you were unable to start your first higher education within the 2-year dealine
  • Your medical certificate needs to be signed by a doctor and contain their offical stamp
    • Prints from sundhed.dk, epicrisis etc. is not enough documentation in itself.

Example:

I can confirm, that XX with the CPR-number XXXXXX-XXXX in the period of May 2017 and until November 2019 has been sick. Because of this, XX was not able to start their first higher education in the years: 2017, 2018 and 2019

Non-Danish Citizens

When determining whether you have met the criteria for the 2-year deadline, we look at the year of your first qualifying education (upper secondary school / high school) and the year of your enrollment at university.

This information is usually not automatically registered in our systems, and therefore you need to apply for the extra 12 SU portions in addition to the standard study-time.

Application: You apply for the extra 12 SU portions in minSU -> søg SU -> støttetid.

Documentation: You need to upload the year of your qualifying education, as well as your diplomas for both your upper secondary school and your bachelor’s degree (unless you took your bachelor’s in Denmark).

Please note for all documentation it applies that we need a copy of the original documentation written in the official language stamped and signed by your home institution/school as well as a copy of your documentation translated into English by a certified translator.

NB: The enrollment date also must be a part of the documentation.
