New framework for thesis supervision plans at the Faculty of Arts

Starting with the summer exams of 2022, certain changes will be made in the framework for thesis supervision plans at the faculty.

The changes are made to ensure that you as a student gain approval of your thesis statement before writing your thesis.

What are the changes?

To make sure that you have the best possible start to the process of writing your thesis (both the first time you try to pass the exam and any subsequent attempts you may make), the following measures are to be implemented:

  • Arts Studies Administration will contact you if you do not submit a supervision plan including a thesis statement. This is to make sure that you have an approved supervision plan before starting the thesis period.
  • You must upload your approved supervision plan as an appendix when you submit your thesis. If you do not gain advance approval of your supervision plan, this will be regarded as a failed attempt to pass the exam, and your thesis will not be assessed if you fail to upload the plan as an appendix when submitting your thesis.
  • If you use one of your attempts to pass the exam in this way, you will be given some time between attempts to draw up a revised supervision plan including an amended thesis statement. As a result, the second and third attempts to pass the exam will not start until 14 days after the submission deadline for the previous attempt. These 14 days must be used to draw up a revised thesis statement in collaboration with the supervisor. The submission deadline for the new attempt is three months after the 14 days have elapsed.

Who will be affected by this?

The new framework will affect all students who start their thesis after 1 June 2022. If the new framework can be of relevance to you, you will be contacted directly via your AU email with more information.

Changing your thesis statement for your second/third attempt

As before, you as a student must change your thesis statement for your second/third attempt to pass the exam. However, as something new you will be given a certain amount of time to change your thesis statement between attempts to pass the exam, in collaboration with your supervisor.  Your supervisor will help you to change your thesis statement sufficiently. In this connection, the template for supervision plans for second and third attempts to pass the exam will be updated, so this is where you should state your previous and amended thesis statements.
