Af.1: Atomic Physics I

Contents

This is an introductory course on atomic and molecular physics. It starts with the introduction of spin and a discussion of relativistic effects (fine-structure) and the anomalous Zeeman effect of Hydrogen-like atoms. The interaction of atoms with radiation fields is discussed semiclassically, including Einstein's thermodynamic argument. Dipole approximation, selection rules and atomic lifetimes are treated. The structure of atoms with more than one electron is studied and the periodic table of elements discussed. The formation of small molecules is discussed briefly.
