Experimental Physics
Af.5: Experimental Physics
Contents
A course in experimental physics, consisting of 8 exercises each of 3 hours duration and 3 more advanced exercises of 2 times 3-5 hours. The course runs from September to May.
Contents of the 8 compulsory exercises:
- Introduction to energy measurements and computer data analysis.
- Gamma-radiation measured with a NaI detector and determination of halflife of V-52.
- Decay scheme for Mn-56 -> Fe-56, measured with a high resolution Ge(Li) detector.
- X-rays (from radioactive sources or an X-ray tube) measured with a Si(Li) diode.
- Rutherford scattering of 400 keV protons from a van de Graaff accelerator.
- Fermi distributions for metals from angular measurements of positron annihilation.
- Microwave emission with Gunn diode, including antenna measurements and modulation.
- Optical resonators with a He-Ne laser: #232&;talon, coating, confocal mirrors analyser.
Furthermore, 3 exercises are chosen among 5 standard advanced experiments and 15 research projects related to active groups. Reports are written for each experiment.
