Aim
To introduce the student to (1) microtectonic processes in crystalline materials, (2) techniques of observation and (3) interpretation of microtectonic data.
Contents
Deformation mechanisms and their microstructural "fingerprints"; formation of planar and linear fabrics; formation of crystallographic preferred orientation in creeping rocks; relationships between deformation and metamorphism as revealed by textural and microstructural observations; paleopiezometry; oriented handspecimens and thinsections; measurement of microfabrics with U-stage and the optical microscope; diffraction techniques and the scanning electron microscope; digital image analysis; statistical treatment of data and their interpretation.
