Aim

To give an introduction to the structure and biosynthesis of macromolecules, maintenance and regulation of genetic information, and methods in biotechnology.

Contents

The structure and function of nucleic acids; The genetic code; Recombinant DNA technology; DNA replication and repair; Transcription and RNA processing; Protein synthesis, tRNA, ribosome structure and function; Control of gene expression, the operon, chromatin structure and function. 

Term

4th quarter (students of molecular biology, medicinal chemistry) and 6th quarter (students of biology, nanotechnology)

Prerequisites (qualifications or requirements)

Enrollment at the Science Faculty

Type of classes

21 lectures; 18 theoretical exercises; 8 practical exercises (obligatory)
There will be a special class for students enrolled on the Nanoscience education for the exercises.

Type of evaluation and aids

Two-hour written examination without aids; Evaluation on basis of the 13-grading system using external evaluation
