Guidelines for student orientation

To ensure that orientation week is a psychologically safe, inclusive experience for all new students, you as a student and you as a tutor are responsible for following certain guidelines. These guidelines have also been put in place to ensure that you know what is expected of you as both student and tutor. If you, as a tutor, find yourself in a situation where you are unsure about the guidelines, you can always get support from the contact person at your faculty.

Alcohol guidelines for orientation week

  • All new students must feel welcome at all activities whether or not they consume alcohol.
  • Tutors are responsible for ensuring that everyone feels included in events regardless of whether or not they consume alcohol.
  • Alcohol-free events must be included in the orientation week programme.
  • The tutors are responsible for ensuring that the planned activities are not experienced as inappropriate or offensive by the individual student.
  • During orientation week, tutors and new students may not consume alcohol before 16:00.
  • No alcohol may be served at academic events, even if they take place after 16:00.
  • The tutor group must ensure that there are sober tutors present at all events organised by tutors.
  • These guidelines also apply to any weekend trips/overnight stays organised in connection with orientation week.
  • The tutor group must ensure that at least two sober tutors are present for the entire duration of the weekend trip.
  • The tutors must all ensure safe transportation home from the weekend trip for all new students.

Guidelines for sponsorship agreements at the start of the semester

No sponsorships allowed during onboarding activities for students

At AU, we believe it is important for new students to be able to focus on their new degree programme, information relevant to their studies, and new friendships when they start at university. For this reason, AU has established university-wide guidelines for sponsorships and advertising for the first month of the semester.

The guidelines come into effect from the first day of orientation week and until 1 October (summer start) and 1 March (winter start).

What does this mean?

  • As tutors, you are not allowed to receive offers, gifts or other sponsored goods from companies, bars/restaurants, trade unions or external organisations. For example, sponsors are not allowed to feature on tutors’ t-shirts or in introductory material, nor are they allowed to sponsor catering or similar activities.
  • You may receive prize gifts to be awarded in connection with student onboarding activities. But these gifts must not contain alcohol, and no additional advertising is allowed in exchange for the gifts.
  • You are welcome to collaborate with relevant internal associations such as Stakbogladen bookshop, the Student House and the Student Council, and other local student associations.
  • Trade unions are not allowed to participate in onboarding activities. If you are contacted by a trade union that wants to get in touch with the new students, please redirect them to your faculty’s studies administration, who can organise meetings between the union and students later on in the semester.
