Fieldwork Opportunity: Viking-Age Excavations in Wolin (Summer 2026)

Are you looking for hands-on field experience? A new excavation opportunity is now open through a collaboration between the Polish Academy of Sciences and Aarhus University.

Students are invited to apply for participation in an international archaeological fieldwork project in Wolin, Poland, focusing on the Viking-Age harbour often associated with Jomsborg.

This excavation is organized by the Polish Academy of Sciences in collaboration with Aarhus University.

Project Overview

The 2026 excavation season will investigate key areas of the early medieval harbour and surrounding infrastructure, with a focus on:

  • Harbour structures from the 9th–10th centuries
  • Settlement layers from Wolin’s peak development period
  • Trial trenching in the southern harbour area
  • The search for and excavation of a possible early medieval bridge on Wolin Kępa Island

The project contributes to ongoing research into trade, urbanization, and Scandinavian-Slavic interactions in the Baltic region.

Dates and Participation

  • Fieldwork period: July 6 – September 30, 2026
  • Minimum participation: 2 weeks (full weeks preferred)
  • Festival period (July 27 – August 2): minimum 3 weeks required
  • Longer participation periods will be prioritized

Practical Information

Participants will be provided with:

  • Accommodation in shared (double) rooms
  • One hot meal per day
  • A work schedule typically running Tuesday through Saturday
