Erasmus + grant
For students that are nominated for a study abroad position within the Erasmus-programme!
Every year, Aarhus University applies for EU funding for Erasmus grants for exchange. Erasmus grants are given to AU students who are going on an exchange at one of Aarhus University’s Erasmus partner universities.
You can receive multiple Erasmus grants during your studies if you do multiple exchanges through the Erasmus programme. Bachelor’s students are eligible for grants for up to 12 months; the same applies to both Master’s degree students and doctoral students.
Grant conditions:
- The grants are given for exchanges of between two and 12 months.
- The exchange must not prolong your period of study, and the courses you take must be pre approved so you get a credit transfer and they count as a part of your degreeprogramme at AU.
- You must earn at least 20 ECTS credits per semester while on exchange to be eligible for the grant.
The United Kingdom and Brexit
Note that the United Kingdom is no longer a part of the Erasmus+ programme. You can still apply for exchanges in the UK, but not through Erasmus+. Only standard exchange agreements are available with universities in the UK.
When and how can you apply for an Erasmus+ grant?
Automatic nomination for an Erasmus+ grant
When you are nominated for an Erasmus+ exchange, you will automatically be considered for an Erasmus+ grant. In other words, you don’t need to submit a separate application for a grant.
The International Office (International Centre) distributes the Erasmus+ grants to all AU students who are going on exchange as Erasmus students. The International Office is informed by your faculty in the event that you are nominated for an exchange. The office will then send you an email with further information about the Eramsus grant.
When will you be notified about the grant?
Students who are going on exchange in the autumn can expect to be notified about the Erasmus+ grant in March of the same year.
Students who are going on exchange in the spring can expect to be notified about the Erasmus+ grant in June of the previous year.
What is the amount of the grant?
The amount awarded varies from year to year depending on how much money AU receives from the EU.
It also depends on what country you’re going to and for how long. There is no fixed amount for everyone. If you are traveling to a country with a high cost of living, you can expect to get a larger grant than if you are traveling to a country with a lower cost of living. However, the difference is not dramatic.
Grants range between about 470 and 500 euros per month.
As soon as AU has received the funding from the EU, you will be notified about the amount of the grant and other details.
Note that we can’t guarantee that all Erasmus+ student will receive an Erasmus+ grant, as this depends on the amount of funding we receive. However, it’s safe to assume that there will funding enough for everyone based on the experience of previous years.
Language test
Erasmus students will be asked to take two online language tests: the first at the beginning of their exchange and the second after the exchange. This is because the EU wishes to study the effect of exchanges on students’ foreign language proficiency. The tests, which are not very long, are mandatory. The results of the tests will not have any bearing on your eligibility for an exchange or a grant. The test will evaluate your proficiency in the primary teaching language in your host country.
The language test exists for English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Swedish, Czech, Portuguese, Greek, Polish, Bulgarian, Croatian, Hungarian, Romanian, Slovak and Finnish.
The blue European health insurance card
To be eligible for an Erasmus+ grant, you need to obtain a European Health Insurance Card. The Danish national health insurance card cannot be used outside Denmark. From august 1st 2014 your yellow health insurance card (danish/applicaple to danes) no longer covers as travel health insurance outside Denmark. The European health card is free. It does not provide coverage in all situations, so we recommend that you either take out travel insurance or check what coverage your current insurance offers.
Learning Agreement
All Erasmus+ students are required by the EU to make a Learning Agreement. This document is similar to a pre-approval: you list all of the courses you will be taking abroad and how many ECTS credits they are worth. The Learning Agreement must be signed by your degree programme at AU and your host university.
Documentation you need to submit
When you have been nominated for an Erasmus grant, you will receive information about requirements and necessary documentation by email. You will be asked to provide the following documentation:
- Learning agreement
- Confirmation of mobility period
- Transcript of records from your host university
- Documentation of any language courses you take
- Completed online evaluation form (link will be sent by the EU at the end of the exchange)

All Erasmus+ students are automatically nominated for an Erasmus+ grant. We’ll notify you as soon as we have information about your grant. Students who are going on exchange in the autumn can expect to be notified about the Erasmus grant in March of the same year. Students who are going on exchange in the spring can expect to be notified about the Erasmus grant in September of the previous year.
