Guide to written exams

What is a written exam?

A written exam at the university is also referred to as an 'on-site exam' or a 'supervised exam'.

Supervisors and invigilators are present during the written examination.

For digital written examinations at the university, you must use WISEflow with either Device Monitor or lockdown browser. It will be specified in your flow under "Additional material" which one you need to use for your exam.

Before your exam

When you are taking a written examination at the university, remember to bring:

  • Student ID
  • Mobile phone*
  • A well-functioning PC or Mac

*The mobile phone is only for two-step verification when logging into WISEflow. Once logged in, please turn off your phone and keep it in a closed bag.

Checklist

As preparation for your written examination, it is advisable to go through the following checklist:

  • Can you connect your computer to the wireless network Eduroam?
  • Have you tested whether your word processing program can open docx files?
  • Have you tried working in a word processing program with tables, headers and footers, page numbers, font size, copying text, etc.?
  • Do you know where to save your answers so you can easily find them when you need to submit them?

Device Monitor and lockdown browser

When you are taking a written examination at the university, you must use one of AU's two security programs:

  • either Device Monitor, which automatically takes screenshots of your screen during the test,
  • or lockdown browser, which shuts down everything else on your computer except for the exam itself.

Make sure to test the program you need for your exam in advance. Read more about how to download and test it here.

IT support

IT staff will be present during the examination if you need assistance, such as accessing the exam paper or submitting your assignment.

How to submit your exam

You submit your exam assignment by uploading it in WISEflow.

Deadline for submission

In your exam schedule, you can see the submission deadline for your answer. To ensure that your answer is accepted, it must be submitted before the submission deadline for your exam. Therefore, it's a good idea to be early with your submission so that any unforeseen issues can be addressed before the submission deadline.

It's important that you submit on time. The examination system closes precisely at the submission deadline, and it's the clock in WISEflow that governs. If the submission deadline is at 12:00 PM, you must upload your answer before 12:00 PM.

If you fail to submit on time

If you fail to submit on time, you have generally used an exam attempt. If you have been prevented from submitting due to circumstances beyond your control, you can apply for an exemption.

Here's what you do:

  1. Summon an invigilator who can supervise your submission of an application for exemption to have your answer assessed anyway.
  2. Create and submit your exemption application via https://mitstudie.au.dk/.
  3. Send your answer along with attachments to wiseflow.nat-tech@au.dk.

Check your receipt

Once you have submitted, you will be able to see a receipt in WISEflow confirming that your submission was made on time. Remember to check your receipt to ensure that you have submitted correctly.

After your exam

When will I receive my grade?

As soon as your grade is entered into the examination system, you will be able to view it either by logging on to mitstudie.au.dk or by logging on to STADS. Your grade will be entered no later than the day when the assessment deadline is set. You can find the assessment deadline in the exam schedule.

Can I receive feedback on my exam?

You are not entitled to receive feedback on your exam.

However, you are always welcome to contact the course coordinator to inquire about the possibility of receiving feedback. You can find the name and contact information of the course coordinator in the course catalog.
