Bf.61 Surface Science (1p)

Bf.61 Surface Science (Autumn)

Contents
The surface is the interface of a solid to the outside world. It is the place where everything happens: from corrosion to heterogenous catalysis, from simple crystal growth to the fabrication of semiconductor devices. From a general point of view, the introduction of a surface breaks the three dimensional periodicity of a crystal. This can drastically change the structural, electronic and vibrational properties and determines the chemical reactivity.
This course is an introduction into surface physics and chemistry. We will discuss the difference between the surface and the bulk of a material. We will show how the surface chemical composition as well as the geometric, electronic and vibrational structure can be determined experimentally and we will illustrate this using examples from current research in the field.
