Aim

The course gives the student a basic knowledge of biological concepts within molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics and evolution. It will allow the student to be familiar with the ideas of molecular biology in a broad perspective omitting detailed descriptions of specific fields within the area.

Contents

The course starts with an introduction to the cell as the basic element in all living organisms. The structural elements of the cell such as macromolecules, organelles and membranes and the energy flow of the cell are explained. The course continues with an interpretation of the structure and function of the gene, how gene expression is regulated and how our present knowledge on gene function is applied in modern DNA technology. The course also includes the background for theories on evolution of living organisms.
