Arts Fællesskabsfif

Do you want to establish a strong sense of community in your class? Or does your sense of community need a boost? Then you should try the community-building tool Fællesskabsfif, which is described below.

Most students want to meet outside the classroom. While some may prefer to have a beer or go to the cinema together, others may prefer to have dinner at each other’s place or participate in an activity which has a more academic focus.

Meeting for a walk, a board game or something completely different helps strengthen the sense of community in the class and across any relationships that have already been established.

All of these things require planning and finding a date. Fællesskabsfif can help your class structure the planning, while also giving you ideas for activities you can do together.

You are responsible for bringing Fællesskabsfif into play. However, you can also ask your tutor or student instructor to help you. It can be a good idea for the class to meet right after a lesson to discuss it. You should set aside approx. 1-1.5 hours for this.

Why Fællesskabsfif is a good idea

  • The entire class is involved in planning the activities, and everyone can help decide which activities to include.
  • You will get to know each other across any groups which may already have been formed.
  • Dates for events are set early in the semester, giving everyone the opportunity to schedule the activities in their calendar, and thereby increasing the likelihood of more people being able to participate.
  • The tasks can be delegated at an early stage – taking into account each student’s time and resources – which will increase the chance of an activity actually taking place.

What you should do

Form random groups of 3-5 students, for example by drawing lots. Depending on the size of the class, you agree whether each group should plan one activity per semester or one activity per year.

Each group is responsible for a specific month, so the activities are spread out over the semester/year. It’s a really good idea to add the activities to a joint calendar. You can find a calendar template for your class here.

You can find inspiration for activities below.

What to agree on for each activity

  • Content
  • Date
  • Place
  • Registration/no registration
  • Communication
  • Extra planning meeting (if relevant)
  • Shopping (if relevant)
  • Participation fee (if relevant)
  • Allocation of roles

Many of the activities listed below don’t require active participation. You can still join them even if you cannot afford the activity itself, don’t feel like participating actively or lack the courage. Some students may have a disability that needs to be taken into account. While some students are climbing, others can enjoy a cup of coffee. You can also participate in parts of the activity – for example, you can play board games but choose not to join the Friday bar afterwards. Therefore, you should make sure that it’s possible to register for parts of the activity.
