Choose a supervisor for your master's thesis

Mathematics, Statistics, and Science studies:
On Mathematics, Statistics or Science Studies, you must contact the desired supervisor yourself. However, your supervisor must be approved by the head of degree programme.

The role of main supervisor can be held by permanent academic staff (Associate Professor, Professor, Senior Researcher) as well as Tenure Track Assistant Professors and Assistant Professors who have passed the Assistant Professor's Pedagogical Course.

Mathematics-economics:
On the Mathematics-Economics programme, you can choose a supervisor from the Department of Mathematics (in special cases also from other departments at the Faculty of Natural Sciences) or from the Department of Economics.

The role of main supervisor can be held by permanent academic staff (Associate Professor, Professor, Senior Researcher) as well as Tenure Track Assistant Professors and Assistant Professors who have passed the Assistant Professor's Pedagogical Course.

If you want a supervisor from the Department of Mathematics, you must contact the supervisor yourself. You must also remember to fill out a master's thesis contract from NAT.

If you want a supervisor from the Department of Economics, you must be aware of the following:

  • If you want a supervisor from the Department of Economics, you must register your supervisor request and thesis subject in a special registration form on the Economics study portal. (See under the heading "Registration").
  • For spring 2025, the registration form will be accessible from October 1st to December 1st 2024.
  • If you have questions about the registration of a supervisor at the Department of Economics, you can send an e-mail to: studadm@econ.au.dk
  • You can find a supervisor catalog from the Department of Economics for 2025 here
  • As a student on the Mathematics-Economics programme at the Faculty of Natural Sciences (NAT), it is our rules at NAT that you must follow.
  • The course description for the master's thesis in Mathematics-Economics can be seen in the course catalogue
  • NOTE: If you are assigned a supervisor from the Department of Economics, you must still have filled out your master's thesis contract from NAT.

Data Science:
When searching for a supervisor, you can choose a subject-relevant lecturer at one of the four departments: Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics or Electrical and Computer Engineering. Possibly in collaboration with an external supervisor. The following link provides an overview of supervisors and their field of interest: Supervisor catalog

As a student on the Data science programme at the Faculty of Natural Sciences (NAT), it is our rules at NAT that you must follow.
The course description for the specialization in Data science can be seen in the course catalogue.
Please note that regardless of your supervisor's department, you must fill out a master's thesis contract from NAT.

Do you need help choosing a supervisor?
If you need help finding a supervisor, you can contact the head of the degree programme:

Data science: Jens Ledet Jensen, e-mail: jlj@math.au.dk
Mathematics: Anders Nedergaard Jensen, e-mail: jensen@math.au.dk
Mathematics-Economics: Kent Andersen, e-mail: kent@math.au.dk
Statistics: Lars Nørvang Andersen, e-mail: larsa@math.au.dk
Science studies: Samuel Schindler, e-mail: samuel.schindler@css.au.dk

Master's thesis contract:
REMEMBER that you must have filled out a master's thesis contract at NAT – regardless of which department your supervisor is from! The thesis contract must be approved by your supervisor and the head of degree programme.
The thesis contract must be completed before you begin working on your master's thesis.

You can find more general information about the thesis on the study portal.

The front page

The following information must be stated on the front page of your master's thesis:

  • Your name and student number/ID
  • The name of your supervisor
  • That the thesis is a master's thesis
  • The submission date
  • The title in English (and possibly in Danish)
  • If you do not want your master's thesis published in our library, you must write "Not to be published" on the front page.

Language, abstract, and page number

The master's thesis report must, as a general rule, be in Danish or English.

Abstract:
Your master's thesis report must include an abstract written in English (approximately ½-1 page).

  • When you upload your thesis in the digital exam (WISEflow), you will meet the question "Does the thesis contain confidential material". Answer "Yes" if the thesis is confidential.
  • You must not submit a paper version of your thesis in Informationen on Mathematics (to the library).

Collaboration and confidentiality
If you are asked to fill out a confidentiality agreement, you can find information here (in Danish).

Submission of the master's thesis

For master's theses with a submission deadline in January 2018 and onwards, the submission will take place electronically in the digital exam (from March 2024 it will be WISEflow).

By agreement, the supervisor and examiner can ask for one paper copy in addition to the electronic submission.

NOTE: One paper copy of the thesis must be submitted no later than 1-2 weeks after the submission deadline. The paper copy must be handed in at Informationen på Matematik, Ny Munkegade 118, Bygn. 1530 or sent by post. This copy is a paper version for the library. If the thesis is confidential, it must be stated on the front page of the thesis, and a paper copy must not be submitted in Informationen på Matematik. You also do not have to hand in a paper version of your thesis if you have answered "No" to lending the thesis.

Submission date: Can be found in your master's thesis contract.
Efforts must be made to set the submission deadline for June 5th (for spring theses) and January 10th (for autumn theses).

As a student, it is your own responsibility to hand in your thesis on time.
We therefore recommend that you upload and submit your thesis well in advance of the submission deadline.

As a general rule, you must submit your thesis as one cohenrent pdf file. However, you have the option of attaching attachments in other formats if necessary.

Oral defence (thesis assessment)

The supervisor must set a date for the thesis defense in consultation with the examiner and the student.

Lene Bongaarts can help find an available location at Mathematics, e-mail: lene@math.au.dk

If you would like a room at Economics, you can write to e-mail: studadm@econ.au.dk

There must be set aside approx. one hour for the thesis defence.

The oral defense must be held no later than June 30th (spring) or January 31st (autumn).

Time standards for the thesis defense (thesis assessment):

Mathematics-Economics:

There must be set aside approx. 15 minutes for the student's presentation and approx. 45 minutes for questions/discussion.

For group exams on Mathematics and Economics (typically with 2 students):

  • The specialist defenders must either be held individually (as above),
  • Or the students can hold a joint presentation of approx. 30 minutes and then be examined individually for up to 45 minutes with questions/discussion.

Data science, Mathematiucs, Statistics, and Science studies:

There must be set aside approx. 30 minutes for the student's presentation and approx. 30 minutes for questions/discussion.

Information to supervisors

The following information is specifically addressed to the thesis supervisor.

Please note the following:

  • Master's theses are always with external censorship.
  • As a supervisor, you must find an external examiner for the thesis yourself and contact them.
For supervisors at the Department of Economics: Berit Hansen can be helpful in finding an external examiner for the thesis, e-mail: beh@econ.au.dk
  • It is important that the censor appears in the Mathematics censor corps (for link: Contact Maiken Dazelle Nielsen). There must not be deviations from this list, as the examiner must be approved by the chair of examiners at Mathematics.
  • The name of the censor must be given to Maiken Dazelle Nielsen, maiken@au.dk, who will contact the chairman of censors for approval.
  • As a supervisor, you must in cooperation with the student and the external examiner find a date for the thesis defense.
The assessment deadline is either January 31st (autumn) or June 30th (spring), so the thesis defense must be held no later than this date. NOTE: For "odd" theses there may be a different assessment deadline (the assessment deadline appears in the master's thesis contract).
  • On censorportal Nat-Tech, you will find relevant information about external examination and censorship, including time standards for censor fees, hotel agreements etc.
