Temporary admission to the Master's degree programme

Are you a student at a Bachelor's Degree Programme at Aarhus University?
If you are unable to pass all courses at your Bachelor's Degree Programme prior to study start at your Master's Degree Programme, you can apply for a temporary enrollment at the Master's Degree Programme.

Are you a student in a Bachelor's Degree Programme (Professionsbachelor som Diplomingeniør) at Aarhus University?
If you are unable to pass all courses at your Bachelor's Degree Programme prior to study start at your Master's Degree Programme, you will not be able to get a temporary enrollment at the Master's Degree Programme.
You must re-apply for admission to the Master's Degree Programme as soon as possible.

Are you a student at an education outside Aarhus University?
If you are unable to pass all courses at your qualifying Bachelor's Degree prior to study start at your Master's Degree Programme, you will not be able to obtain temporary enrollment at the Master's Degree Programme.
You must re-apply for admission to the Master's Degree Programme as soon as possible.

You can apply for temporary enrolment on a Master’s degree programme in order to take courses that will be included in your future Master’s degree programme while you are still finishing one or more courses on your Bachelor’s degree programme. There are two requirements to apply for temporary enrolment:

• You must have fewer than 30 ECTS credits left on your Bachelor's degree programme.
• You may only be registered for a maximum of 30 ECTS credits on your Master's programme. It is not possible to take more ECTS credits on the Master's programme.

Due to workload and thus your ability to complete your Bachelor’s degree programme, we recommend that you aim for a semester workload that does not exceed 30 ECTS credits in total.

When processing your application, an overall assessment of your course of study will be conducted. If you have made several attempts to pass one or more courses on your Bachelor's programme and have not yet passed them, you cannot expect to be granted temporary enrolment unless there are other exceptional circumstances in your case that can be included in the overall assessment.

Note that if you are granted temporary enrolment, you should still prioritise completing your Bachelor’s degree programme prior to the start of your Master's degree programme, and that you cannot expect any extension to the temporary enrolment.

The deadlines for applying for temporary enrolment are:

• 1 June (for the autumn semester)
• 1 December (for the spring semester)

It is possible to apply after the deadline if your application is based on matters that were unknown prior to the application deadline.

Note that there is a processing time of 6-8 weeks.

To apply, you must fill in the form 'Application for temporary enrolment'. 

• Please state which courses you still need to pass on your Bachelor’s degree programme and during which examination period they are expected to be completed (remember to include the course title, ECTS credits and examination period).
• Write which Master’s courses you want to attend that will be included in your Master’s degree programme (remember to write course title, ECTS credits and examination period).
• Justify your application – we need to know why you want to deviate from the usual course of study, including whether there are exceptional circumstances.
• Make sure that your Bachelor contract is updated in the contract generator. 
• Before applying, you must have a Master's degree contract in the contract generator.

Once the form has been completed, upload it to My studies (mitstudie.au.dk) and send it as an application under "Applications to the board of studies" - "Temporary enrolment on Master’s degree programme".

Once you have submitted your application for temporary enrolment, the following will take place:

• We register your application and check ECTS credits, programmes, course of study, etc.
• If you are granted temporary enrolment, we will inform Admissions, who will then enrol you. You will be notified of the temporary enrolment via e-Boks or your AU email.
• If you are not granted temporary enrolment, you will receive a letter of rejection in your e-Boks.

If we need any additional information, we will contact you by phone or AU email.

If you complete your Bachelor’s degree programme before your temporary enrolment expires, send an email to indskriv@au.dk to be admitted to your Master's degree programme.

If your temporary enrolment expires before you have completed your Bachelor’s degree programme, make sure to apply for admission to the Master's degree programme once you have completed your Bachelor's degree.

Please note that once your temporary enrolment expires, you will no longer be able to take the exam in courses under your Master’s degree programme, and any exam registrations for courses in your Master’s degree programme will be cancelled.

Please note that you must also apply for admission to a Master's degree programme within the regular deadlines if your degree programme is dimensioned (Biology, Geology, Molecular Biology, Molecular Medicine, and Biomedical Engineering/Technology). It is not enough to apply for temporary enrolment on these programmes.

You can apply for an exemption permitting temporary admission to the Master’s degree enabling you to take courses that will form part of your future Master’s degree programme.

• The sum of the ECTS credits outstanding in your Bachelor’s degree programme and the ECTS credits you wish to take as part of the temporary admission must not exceed 30 ECTS credits altogether. These rules can be adjusted, but it is not possible under any circumstances to obtain an exemption permitting you to gain more than 30 ECTS credits in the Master’s degree programme.

Your application will be decided on the basis of an overall assessment of how you are progressing with your degree. If you still need to pass one or more compulsory study components – for example if you have used several examination attempts in one or more compulsory courses and have not yet passed – you should not expect to be granted exemption for temporary admission to the Master’s degree programme.

You cannot apply for the State Education Grant and Loan Scheme (SU) for the Master’s degree programme on the basis of temporary admission.

• If you have no SU units left from your Bachelor’s degree programme, you cannot apply for SU for the Master’s degree programme until you have completed your Bachelor’s degree and can be enrolled in the Master’s degree programme.
• If you have questions regarding SU, please contact the SU Office.

The deadlines for applying for temporary admission are:

• 1 June (for autumn semester)
• 1 December (for spring semester)

If your application is based on circumstances that were not known at the time of the application deadline, you can apply after the deadlines.

To apply you should fill out this application form: The ‘Exemption for temporary admission’ form.

• Write which courses in your Bachelor’s degree programme you have not yet passed – both the ones you have to pass in the next examination period and those you have to pass later (Remember to write the name of the course, the number of ECTS credits and the examination period).
• Write which courses you expect to pass – they must be part of your Master’s degree programme (Remember to write the name of the course, the number of ECTS credits and the examination period).
• State the reasons for your application – we need to know why your study programme deviates from the norm, including whether any special personal circumstances play a part.
• Attach an approved Bachelor’s programme, but only if it deviates from the one you last submitted (you do not have to attach a new Bachelor's programme, if you have filled it out electronically in the contract generator).
• Attach an approved Master’s programme – we need to know that the courses you wish to take have been approved as part of your future Master’s degree programme. The Master’s degree programme must therefore have been approved by the degree programme coordinator at your department (you do not need to attach the Master's programme, if you have filled it out electronically in the contract generator).

After you have filed your application the following happens:

• We register your application and check the number of ECTS credits, the programmes, your progression, etc.
• If we grant you an exemption for temporary admission, we advise AU Studies centrally, and the office will enrol you. You will be notified of your temporary admission via letter or e-mail.
• If your application for an exemption for temporary admission is rejected, you will be notified accordingly.

We will contact you in case we need more information to deal with your application. Please therefore indicate your mobile number or similar on the application form.

If you complete your Bachelor’s degree before your temporary Master’s degree admission expires, you should send an e-mail to indskriv@au.dk to get enrolled in your Master's programme.

If your temporary Master’s degree admission expires before you have completed your Bachelor’s degree, it is up to you to apply for admission to the Master’s degree programme when you have completed your Bachelor's degree.

• You should also be aware that you can no longer sit examinations in the courses that form part of your Master’s degree programme after the expiry of your temporary admission to the programme, and that any registrations for examinations in courses forming part of your Master’s degree programme will be cancelled.

It is extremely important that you have a plan for completing your Bachelor’s degree as soon as possible and a temporary plan for your Master’s degree (the Master’s programme).

It is also important to emphasise that we assume you give priority to completing your Bachelor’s degree programme before commencing the Master’s degree programme, and you cannot expect to receive an extension of the temporary admission.
