Basic History of Science

Contents
The course aims at presenting a comprehensive account of the historical development of the sciences, including technological, medical and other applied aspects, from the very beginning of the scientific project until modern times. This will be done contextually, i.e. within the societal and cultural contexts relevant for the particular periods.

Text-books
David C. Lindberg, The beginnings of Western Science (University of Chicago Press 1992), pb., 455 pp and John Marks, Science and the Making of the Modern World (Heinemann 1983), pb., 508 pp plus a booklet with selected source material.

Evaluation
To pass requires active participation and writing a short (5-7 pp) paper or passing an exam. It is possible to obtain further credits by writing an essay.
