There are various procedures for entering into an agreement with supervisors on the individual study programs. Below you can see what apply to your degree program.
The MSc Programme in the Anthropology of Education and Globalisation involves doing fieldwork in your third semester. The material produced is used for your Master’s thesis, which is written in the fourth semester. This means that you are actually working on your Master’s thesis in the third and fourth semesters, even though you do not formally enrol for your thesis until the start of the fourth semester.
At the end of the second semester (the end of May), and in connection with the course called “Ethnographic Research Methods and Field Preparation”, you have to submit a short abstract (10-15 lines) about your upcoming fieldwork: location, interest, focus, methods, and if possible a little about the theoretical approach. On the basis of this abstract, a supervisor will be assigned to you for your fieldwork.
Efforts will be made to ensure that the supervisor assigned to you continues as your thesis supervisor. But if this proves to be impossible, there is a transfer window at the end of November when you can apply for a thesis supervisor.
Send your application in with three priorities and complete "the thesis subject area". If you have discussed the issue with a supervisor of the first priority, answer 'yes' to the question "The topic has been discussed with supervisor". Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that you can obtain a supervisor who has your first priority.
The Thesis administrator allocates a supervisor according to the subject area of the Master's thesis. You are free to discuss the subject area with potential supervisors before you send in your application for Thesis supervisor. If you have done this, then answer “yes” to the question “The topic has been discussed with supervisor”. It is the Thesis administrator who makes the final allocation of Thesis supervisors. Therefore students and potential supervisors cannot make final agreements on supervision.
You need to get the approval of the head of department in order to make an agreement with a thesis supervisor. You should include the names of three potential supervisors, in order of priority. You should only submit one form, but it is strongly recommended that you list two potential topics in the box marked “Thesis topic”, again in order of priority. This will make it more likely that you will be allocated a combination of topic and supervisor that is close to your preferences.
The course coordinator appoints a supervisor based on the topic field of the thesis in question, ensuring that the workload is shared evenly by the supervisors. You are welcome to discuss the topic with potential supervisors before you apply. If you do this, you should answer “Yes” when asked whether you have discussed your topic with a supervisor.
Students and potential supervisors are not allowed to enter into binding supervision agreements, because it is the course coordinator who arranges the final allocation. However, you are welcome to make up to three wishes for the supervisor you would prefer (in order of priority).
