Student Job

In Denmark, part time work opportunities for students are called ‘student jobs’. A student job can be a great way to earn money to support yourself during your studies and add valuable experience to your CV. It is possible to distinguish between two types of student jobs:

  1. Work that is unrelated to your degree
  2. Work that is related to your degree

Work opportunities related to your degree are called ‘study relevant student jobs”.  This type of job is particularly beneficial to your CV and future career. Before you start looking for such a position, it may be helpful to ask yourself:

  • What industries do I find interesting and exciting?
  • How can I contribute to this industry based on my degree programme and academic competences?
  • What do I want to work with in the future?

These questions can help identify what a relevant student job looks like for you, and subsequently narrow down your job search. Remember that many jobs can be professionally or personally relevant to you. When interacting with a new field, you acquire knowledge, skills, and competences.

Studies show that a relevant student job can make it much easier for you to find a job when you graduate, as it gives you the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with your subject alongside your studies. As a bonus, a student job can provide you with knowledge of and insight into the labour market which can help you decide what you would like to work with after graduation.

HOW CAN A STUDENT JOB HELP YOU?

In addition to some extra money, a student job can give you valuable competences that are highly appreciated by a potential future employer. A relevant student job will give you the opportunity to:

  • Network among professionals in your industry

  • Acquire good competences to put on your CV

  • Gain experience converting theory into practice

  • Challenge and develop yourself

  • Test yourself in different work environments

  • Gain experience describing your competences and translating them into action
