International elective courses

The "International Electives" program provides an opportunity to spend your profile semester at a university abroad. This can be either at one of the many partner institutions with which AU has established exchange agreements or at a university of your own choosing that you independently arrange.

This page offers a comprehensive overview of the planning process, along with key deadlines that you should consider. It is important to note that planning must commence in the first semester of your Master’s degree program.

Here's how to do it

This section provides an overview of the key steps involved in the planning process.

Please be aware that this overview is limited to the actions required to secure AU's approval for your stay. Additional deadlines may apply at the university abroad, particularly concerning matters such as SU, scholarships, housing, and other logistical arrangements.

1. Find out where you want to go

  • See the range exchange places in MoveON
You can see which universities Aarhus University has exchange agreements with in the database MoveON. The exchange places for which you can apply are ready one month before the application deadline.
  • Travel on your own
You also have the opportunity to travel abroad as a free mover – instead of applying for an exchange agreement, you arrange contact with a foreign university yourself. Read more about this option here.

2. Apply for exchange agreement via MoveOn

  • How do I apply?
Once you know where you want to go, you must apply for a place on one or more exchange agreements through MoveON
  • When should I apply?
The application deadline is 1 December for the following academic year. This means that you must apply at the very first semester of your Master’s degree programme
  • When will I receive an answer?
You will receive an answer as to whether you have been granted an exchange place during the January. Keep an eye on your email – and remember to confirm your spot if you are offered a spot. Read more about applications and AU's exchange agreements
  • Are you travelling as a freemover?
If you are travelling as a free mover, you do not need to apply for a place under an exchange agreement no later than 1. December. However, we do recommend that you start planning your first semester so that you have plenty of time to reach an agreement before the deadline for applying for advance approval of the courses you want to take at the university in question (see step 3).

3. Apply for advance approval of courses

  • Find courses at the foreign university
Once you have been allocated a place (through an AU exchange agreement or otherwise), you must find out which courses you want to take at the foreign university. If you have been assigned a place via MoveON, you can find a link to the university's course catalogue via the system

  • Academic requirements for the courses
For the subjects to be included in your programme, they must meet the following requirements:
    • They must be on Master's degree level
    • They must correspond to a total of 30 ECTS credits.
    • The courses must fall within the main subject areas of your degree programme and contain elements that are thematically or methodologically relevant to your Master's thesis. Read more in your academic regulations

  • Apply advance approval
Then you must apply for advance approval of the subjects. This pre-approval is the academic approval for the courses to be included in your Master’s degree programme, and counts as a course registration at the relevant semester.

4. Apply for admission at the foreign university

Once you have been awarded an exchange agreement and confirmed your place, you must apply for admission at the foreign university.

You will receive an email with information on how to apply and the deadlines you need to be aware of at the foreign university.
