Study contracts

What is a study contract?

A study contract is an overview of your study programme - in other words, it is a complete list of the courses you are planning to follow. It must be composed individually and under guidance, and it must be approved by the head of degree programme. The contract is thus an academic approval of your specific study programme constituting a degree within your field.

When the contract has been approved by the head of degree programme, it is mandatory, and you must therefore only register for the courses that are included in the contract. The contract, and hence the courses in your programme, can be changed, but the changes must be approved by your head of degree programme, before you register for courses.

Remember that you must update and have your contract reapproved every time you make changes to your study programme.

You cannot finish your study programme without an updated and approved contract.

You can find the contract generator here

NB: The fact that courses are approved in your study contract does not mean that you are automatically registered for them - you must register for courses at mitstuide.au.dk, when the course registration is open.

How do you create a study contract?

  • You must create your study contract (Bachelor's and Master's degree programs) by using the
    online contract generator
. There you will also find guidance in how to fill in the contract.
  • You log in using the same user name and password that you use at mitstudie.au.dk.

When using the generator, you must remember to identify the courses for which you have received a credit transfer. In addition, you must indicate which of the lacking compulsory courses, you will replace with credits from outside your faculty.

Access to the Contract Generator

As of March 2024, access to the contract generator requires a secure internet connection. Therefore, please ensure one of the following:

  • Log in while on AU's Eduroam network.
  • Download and activate AU's VPN.

You can find guidance and download link for the VPN here

Bachelor's contract

You must create a Bachelor's contract prior to registering for your first elective course in your program.

Preparation of your Bachelor's contract must take place under guidance and therefore you should contact your head of degree programme and receive the needed student guidance before you complete your contract.

Your Bachelor's contract must (as far as possible) be submitted no later than:

  • November 1st - if the first elective courses take place the following spring
  • May 1st - if the first elective courses take place the following fall

Master's contract

You must have an approved Master's contract before starting your degree program.

If you have a bachelor's degree from another university you cannot fill in a Master's contract until you have been admitted on your degree program as you cannot log in to the system prior to admission.

Preparation of your Masters's contract must take place under guidance and therefore you should contact the head of degree programme and receive the needed student guidance before you complete your contract.

Your Masters's contract must (as far as possible) be submitted no later than:

  • November 1st (if you are planning on starting your Master's degree the following spring)
  • May 1st (if you are planning on starting your Master's degree the following fall, and if you register for courses in accordance with the prescribed study plan)
  • Study start (if you did not study at AU the preceding semester)

Please notice: An approved Master's contract is not an approval of admission to the Master's programme. You have to apply for admission separately. You can read more about how to apply for admission to a Master’s degree programme here.

You can find a guide on how to fill out your Master's contract here:
