Algebraic Geometry II

Algebraic Geometry II

4 hours of lectures and exercises per week.

Lecturer: Jesper Funch Thomsen

Content:
This is a continuation of the course ``Algebraic Geometry''. We start by describing the fibers of a morphism between two algebraic varieties. In order to get a satisfactory description, we will have to introduce a concept called an algebraic scheme, which is a slight generalization of the concept of an algebraic variety. The description of algebraic schemes will occupy the rest of the course. In particular, we will find that varieties and schemes have many thing in common, but we will also find rather amusing differences such as examples of nonzero functions on schemes with square zero.

Prerequisites: Algebraic Geometry.

Literature: D. Mumford, The red book of varieties and schemes, Springer Verlag.
