Aim
The course aims at giving the student an elementary insight into the basic principles and the applications of common physical methods in biochemistry and molecular biology.
Contents
Based on general principles of protein structure, interactions, and thermodynamics, the course describes a variety of methods for separation and characterization of biological macromolecules. This includes chromatography, electrophoresis, mass spectrometry, various kinds of spectroscopies (electronic and vibrational absorption), linear and circular dichroism, fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. High priority is devoted to comparison of the various methods, highlighting their applicability, interplay and complementary role for characterization of biological macromolecules.
