Microbial Physiology and Phylogeny

Microbial Physiology and Phylogeny

Aims

The goal of the course is to give a "hands-on" experience with both classical and advanced techniques for isolation, identification and cultivation of bacteria.

Contents

Isolation of bacteria in pure culture from natural samples. Identification of isolated bacterial strains using a variety of biochemical and physiological methods and by molecular techniques (PCR of ribosomal genes, sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis of own sequence data).

Mass cultivation of bacteria in a 10 liter pilot-fermentor (e.g. growth physiology, measurement of enzyme activities).
