Plant-Taxonomic Methods

C-module, Spring 2000, 1 point, 5 ECTS


Aims

To make students able to a) use plant-taxonomic methods in research and b) to critically evaluate plant-taxonomic literature.


Contents

In a mixture of lectures and practical exercises the students will be introduced to the history of plant-taxonomy, the literature used in plant-taxonomic research, the use of herbaria and other facilities, how to write taxonomic discriptions and keys, the Botanical Code of Nomenclature and its history, mulitvariate analysis of taxanomic characters, cladistic analysis, and phylogenetic classification.


Teaching curriculum

Two 3-hours modules each week for 7 weeks from 6 March to 22 April, 2000 Lectures and practical exercises will be combined depending on the subject. The entire course, including all written assignments will be in English.


Prerequisisite

A good general knowledge of plant morphology and biology.

Examination

No final exam but students must complete all assignments.


Limit on number of attendees

12 attendees with preference given to those who write their thesis in botany.
