Parents (parental payments)

If you become a parent while studying, you can apply for parental payments (fødselsstøtte).

How many parental payments can I get?

Parental payments (fødselstøtte) are extra SU portions that are added to your total number of SU portions (klippekort). Both parents can get up to 9 months with parental payments if both are students. It is possible to transfer up to 3 months of parental payments to the other parent if both parents are eligible for SU. Parental payments need to be used during the study program you were enrolled in when you became a parent.

Sole providers can receive up to 12 months of parental payments in connection with birth or adoption. This is applicable only for sole providers who receive ekstra børnetilskud from Udbetaling Danmark.

Please note that it is not possible to receive parental payments and provider supplement (forsørgertillæg) at the same time.

How do I apply?

You apply for parental payments via minSU -> "Søg SU" -> “Fødsels-støtte”.

In the application module it will be possible to transfer parental payments to the other parent, as well as plan how and when you would like to receive the payments. You can also change your payment plan later.

When can I apply?

As a mother you can receive parental payments two months before the due date. As a father/co-mother you can receive parental payments from the month when the child is born. You can apply for parental payments a month before you would like the payments to start. That means that if you for example would like to receive parental payments from March, you can apply in February.

What if I switch to a different study program or become a parent before I am enrolled at a study program?

Your parental payments must be used during the study program you were enrolled at when you became a parent. If you discontinue your studies or graduate, you lose the possibility to receive parental payments.

You cannot transfer any unused portions of parental payments to a new study program.

When you change your study program you can apply for parental payments on the same terms and conditions as when you have had a child before you are enrolled at a study program.
