Surface Physics (2p)

Surface Physics (2p)

Indhold

The surface is the interface of a solid to the outside world. It is the place where everything happens: from corrosion to heterogenous catalysis, from simple crystal growth to the fabrication of semiconductor devices and novel functionalized nanostructures. From a general point of view, the introduction of a surface breaks the three dimensional periodicity of a crystal. This can drastically change the structural, electronic and vibrational properties, and determines the chemical reactivity of the material.

This course is an introduction to the field of surface physics or rather surface science. We will discuss the difference between the surface and the bulk properties of a material. We will show how the surface chemical composition as well as the geometric, electronic and vibrational structure of a surface can be determined experimentally, and we will illustrate this using examples from current research in the field.
