BSc in Economics and Business Administration

Electives

Registration period

  • Registration period for courses in the spring semester: 1-5 December
  • Registration period for courses in the autumn semester: 1-5 May

Various types of electives

If you follow the prescribed course of study, your electives, corresponding to 30 ECTS, are placed in the 5th semester.

Due to the various types of electives, this means that you can choose between the following options:

Pre-approval and credit transfer
If you wish to attend courses outside your programme/university you must apply for a pre-approval well in advance. In the following link you can find information about applying for pre-approval of courses from other studies.

Overview of elective courses

Before you register for any courses, please check whether the classes or exam dates for the courses in question overlap. You can do this through the course clusters or by manually checking for any overlapping classes or exams in the timetables.

Course clusters:

The timetables and exam schedules have been configured to ensure that no classes and/or exams overlap within the course clusters, but it is possible to encounter overlapping classes and/or exams between courses from different course clusters.

You are free to select courses from the course cluster that best suits your study programme.

Elective courses from different course clusters:

If you want to register for courses from different course clusters, please be highly aware that you risk having classes or exams that overlap. Before you register for courses from different course clusters, please check for:

  • Overlapping classes in timetable.au.dk
  • Overlapping exams in the exam schedule

If you have to attend a compulsory course along with your elective course, you also have to remember to check for any overlaps between the compulsory course and the elective course. You can also check compulsory courses in timetable.au.dk

After the deadline for registration, there may unfortunately still be changes to the timetable that will cause  an overlap of teaching and/or exams.

Please be aware that your registration is binding.

Step-by-step guide to registration

Step-by-step guide to registration

  1. Please find the elective courses offered on your degree programme in the AU course catalogue . You can limit your search by selecting “degree programme” and “period”.
  2. Please select which courses you wish to register for. See section 'Overview of elective courses'. Your registration is binding. This means that you will not be able to cancel or change your registration for elective courses once the deadline for registration has expired, unless you apply for and are granted a dispensation from the board of studies.
  3. Please log on to mitstudie.dk – find a direct link to the student self-service system (STADS) – register for courses.  Go to -> ‘Courses’ -> ‘Register’. Here you will find a registration form with a list of your course options.
  4. Please select “1” for each course you wish to register for.
  5. You should only register for the number of courses you wish to take. If you are registered for Summer University courses, credit modules at another educational institution or an exchange programme, you should only register for the number of courses you will attend at your own degree programme in autumn 2021. If you select too many courses, you will automatically be withdrawn from any excess courses that do not fit into your study programme. This happens on a random basis and does not take into account which specific courses you are withdrawn from.
  6. After 14 December, you must check your registrations in the student self-service system STADS under ‘Classes - show registrations and cancellations’. If you initially registered for three courses but are now only able to see two courses in your overview of registrations, you were not allocated a place on all your desired courses in the first round of registration. This means that you will be able to register for a third course in the second registration period.
  7. The second registration period takes place from 15 - 16 December. Here you will be able to register for courses with vacant places. You must again check your registrations in the STADS self-service. After 20 December you can find your courses in STADS. If you have not received a place after the second registration round, you can contact your study administrator by e-mail: bachelor.bss@au.dk or kandidat.bss@au.dk

Cancelling elective courses

All students who have been registered for their selected courses are bound by their choice. This means that you will not be able to cancel or change your registration for elective courses once the deadline for registration has expired, and the elective course is a binding part of your study programme.

If you are registered for a course, you can only withdraw from this registration if instead, the semester in question are to be used for:

  • Exchange
  • Project-Based Topic
  • Admission as a visiting student at other study programmes/educational institutions

Dispensation to cancel registration

If none of the above two reasons for cancellation apply to you, the board of studies can grant you permission to withdraw from or change elective courses. Up to one week into the semester, it is possible to apply for a change of elective subject without the need for documentation of unusual circumstances. It is a prerequisite for changing electives that the elective you want to change to, is placed in the same semester as the elective you want to change from. Later than one week inside the semester the board of studies can only grant permission to withdraw if exceptional circumstances exist and are deemed to impact your ability to complete the course. You apply for dispensation via mitstudie.au.dk.

Allocation of places

Allocation of places

If the number of registrations for a course exceeds the number of available places on that course, the places will be allocated by drawing lots.

If you are not granted a place on one or more of your desired courses, you must register anew in the second registration period.

If you initially registered for three courses but are now only able to see two courses in your overview of registrations, you were not allocated a place on all your desired courses in the first round of registration. This means that you will be able to register for a third course in the second registration period.

Class allocation

If you choose a course where there are several classes, it will be coincidentally in which class you will be placed. This means that if you choose courses with one or more students, e.g. your study group, there is no guarantee that you will be in the same class.

Top-up students

As a student on the top-up programme, your courses are organised in a different order compared to students on the regular programme for the BSc in Economics and Business Administration. This means that for students enrolled from summer 2020 onwards, the third semester will be comprised of both obligatory courses and 10 ECTS electives. You are free to choose among the electives offered for the usual BSc 5th semester, but you should be aware that there may be timetable and/or exam clashes between the obligatory courses and the electives.

Before you register, it is therefore important that you check the following:

  • timetable clashes through timetable.au.dk
  • exam clashes through the exam schedule

Please also note that registrations are binding.
